Leanna Bre | So People-y

  • The Apothecary at Shelterwood Collective 108 South Jackson Street Seattle, WA, 98104 United States (map)

Please join us Thursday, August 7 from 5-8p in The Apothecary for So People-y, a photography exhibition by Leanna Bre.

So People-y is about the simple and overwhelming fact that the world is full of people and every single one is having their own experience all the time. We are surrounded by a loud, layered chorus of interiorities, if we care to notice and tune in. These portraits are an attempt to hold that complexity still for a moment so that we might observe our own participation.

We are always connected and disconnected, agreeing and disagreeing, moving and still. These portraits document the invisible space in between us: glances that don’t meet, a child wanting their mother and their mother wanting a moment alone, someone pressing in at the moment another pulls away. The camera isn’t claiming objectivity. Instead we linger inbetween what can be witnessed and the interiority which must be imagined. The viewer is invited to join the layered abundance of stories already happening, without resolution. After all, this is only another story of what is happening, another subjective experience.

Leanna Bre

Leanna Bre is a documentary photographer located in South Seattle who uses photography as a meditative practice. Psychotherapist by day, photographer on the weekends; she uses a 23mm fixed lens, small cheap camera that she can throw in the bottom of her bag and let it get all banged around. She values ordinary time, and regular experiences. She is not interested in the concept of “flattering.” These are her people and they are all truly deeply beautiful to her. The world is overwhelming and big and loud, framing it over and over in a 3:2 box, helps Leanna contain her experiences and share her interior world. This work would not exist without her friends and family letting her point the lens at them over and over and over. They have gifted us their faces and we are so grateful.
