Access by Design: Disability Accessibility Considerations in Private Practice

This workshop is designed to equip practitioners with the knowledge and practical tools needed to create accessible practices using the principles of universal design. Universal design is the process of designing environments so that they can be accessed, understood, and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. When an environment is accessible, everyone benefits.

Participants will learn about common barriers disabled folks may encounter when seeking care and how to proactively reduce or eliminate these barriers in clinical environments, website design, policies, communication styles, and service delivery. In addition to learning strategies for improving accessibility within their own practices, participants will gain skills to support clients navigating accessibility challenges in other areas of life, including work and educational settings.

Through this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand key disability accessibility concepts, with special focus on universal design

  • Understand common access barriers disabled individuals may encounter when seeking care

  • Learn practical strategies for applying the principles of universal design in private practice

  • Learn how to support accessibility for disabled clients in other domains of life, including work and education
