Skillshare | Integrating Psychodynamic Insights with DBT Skills to Facilitate Healing
The Collective Skillshare is our lunch-and-learn series — an hour to sharpen a skill, sit with a hard question, and stay in practice together. This month we have the pleasure of learning from and with fellow member Jennifer Slawson.
When working with complex trauma, prolonged grief, and life-altering transitions, one may develop deeply protective measures to survive difficult circumstances. These same protective measures may form into more stable functioning that no longer serve clients and keep them feeling stuck inside and in their relationships.
This workshop will offer ways practitioners can integrate psychodynamic and DBT theories and interventions to facilitate client insight about defenses and relational patterns while building skills to reduce defenses and enable adaptive connections. Theoretical concepts will be provided along with practical application through a group case study. Adaptations for use with diverse client identities and needs will be provided along with recommendations for self-reflection, supervision, and consultation to enable cultural humility and competence.
Through this workshop, participants will be able to:
Use a dual theoretical model for conceptualization
Identify and introduce DBT skills that build upon client insights
Craft experiments and accountability to move clients from insight to action

She/her
Jennifer Slawson joined the counseling profession after earning her MBA and working in Corporate America for two decades primarily in the tech industry. Before becoming a counselor, she became a trained and credentialed coach to support career, work, and life topics and started a coaching and now counseling business called Reinvention Space. The surge in mental health care needs during the pandemic inspired a shift to counseling as she saw a growing need to reduce global and individual suffering.
Throughout her own career and life journey, Jennifer experienced a range of life-altering transitions that led to a passionate pursuit of providing hope and healing to others. Along the way, she observed we may often find ourselves wanting to reinvent something in our lives but may not always know what, why, when or how. As a mental health counselor, she provides gentle and caring support for the journey while helping clients create clarity and take action.
